A General Meeting in February

Join with other advocates to plot out the coming months, + a special guest!

A General Meeting in February

On February 8th, at 11AM, we’ll gather at OakStop in downtown Oakland for our first general meeting of Traffic Violence Rapid Response (TVRR) for the year (and the first since May of last year!). Please save the date, and plan to be there! You do not need to be a “member” as we have no official anything. If you’re interested in safe streets in Oakland, please come! And share this with others of like mind.

We have a special guest lined up: Josh Rowan, Director of Oakland DOT, will attend for part of the meeting for a Q&A session with attendees. So, please bring your questions for him regarding programs, projects, issues, or what have you. Director Rowan will also speak briefly about his top priorities for the coming year.

We will recap the second half of 2024, in terms of progress and challenges for traffic safety, and ongoing efforts to which people might want to contribute will be presented. We’ll also all try to analyze the election and what lies in store for Oakland and what it means for safe streets advocacy. (Ed. Note: TVRR does not endorse candidates, as we focus on issues and will work with anyone who supports our goals.)

Finally, in the second half, we will plot out the future, or at least the next six months or so. If you have projects you want to propose or get a discussion on, please bring them! There are some opportunities in the community traffic calming space that we will also consider and potentially organize around.

We’ll also revisit the question of our organizational name. Some folks like the edginess, some folks are turned off by it, we’ve used it now for approaching three years. What works best for the work we do? Direct action is at the core of our identity, and we have no funders or others to satisfy but ourselves. What do you think?

P.S. a partial victory on Measure U bond sales:

After significant outcry from advocates and residents, the outgoing Council voted on December 16th to increase the overall volume of bonds sold in 2025 to $79M, and to increase the OakDOT allotment from $7M to $39M. So that was a major win for us! It’s still not what we would have expected for a full-force repaving + street safety program, but it’s far better than it was going to be. Much still remains to be resolved, including when the bond sales will be scheduled, as OakDOT can only spend the money within a certain time prior to the actual sale. More to come…
