On Saturday, August 16th, 2025 at 2:24pm a driver hit a 54 year old Asian cyclist as she was crossing 51st/52nd at Shattuck in North Oakland. The Oakland Police Department published a press release on Tuesday, August 19th that the cyclist has been pronounced dead.

Traffic Case Information #25-035846

On August 16, 2025, at approximately 1424 hours, Oakland Police Officers were dispatched to 51st St and Shattuck Ave to investigate a report of a vehicle vs. cyclist. Officers located a female cyclist with visible injuries to her face. OFD and medical personnel arrived on scene.

Falck transported the cyclist to Highland Hospital for medical attention.

On August 19th, 2025 the Oakland Police Department Traffic Division was notified the cyclist was pronounced deceased.

It appears the cyclist was traveling northbound on Shattuck Ave, through a red light. The cyclist collided with the vehicle, who was traveling westbound on St through a solid green light. The vehicle driver stayed on scene and provided a statement to law enforcement.

The cyclist is a female Asian in her 50's from Berkeley. The identification is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

It does not appear alcohol or drugs played a factor in this collision.

This incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit at (510) 777-8570.

Our hearts go out to the person whose life was cut short as she was doing something as simple as riding her bike, and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends.

We are saddened and outraged that yet another life has been tragically taken due to traffic violence. 17 people have been needlessly killed on the streets of Oakland just this year, with untold numbers of others whose lives have been irreparably harmed because of serious injuries due to traffic violence. These injuries and deaths from traffic violence are preventable.

Map of traffic fatalities in Oakland since 2019

Traffic safety is public safety. We call on elected leaders, Oakland Police Department, Oakland Fire Department, and the Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT) to treat the traffic safety crisis like the public safety crisis it is and to accelerate efforts to make Oakland’s streets safe for everyone, whether they are traveling by car, bike, on foot, or in a mobility device.

  • We call on OakDOT to prioritize street safety upgrades here and across the city. There is currently no safe way for a cyclist to cross this high volume and high speed intersection. OakDOT should evaluate the number of lanes, lane widths, traffic speeds, and traffic signals to ensure bicyclists and pedestrians can safely cross the street.
  • We call on the Oakland Police Department to treat these wrongful traffic deaths with the same gravity as other deaths.
  • We call on the Oakland Fire Department to work collaboratively with OakDOT to reduce vehicle lanes and slow vehicle traffic across Oakland to save lives.
  • We call on Oakland’s elected leadership to prioritize and fully fund street safety work and remove contracting, staffing and other barriers to achieving safe streets for all residents.
